- Closing is the finish line. After you and the buyer have signed the sales contract and opened escrow, there will be a period of time during which both of you must complete any unfinished agreements in the contract and the home inspection will occur. After this, when the deed is recorded and all the papers signed, escrow will close and you will officially have sold your home.
Tips for Moving
Moving can be a very stressful process. Many families and individuals find that it leaves them feeling unduly overwhelmed during a time that is already turbulent and fraught with change. It is certainly true that moving can be traumatic – but it doesn’t have to be! Use these insider tips to help smooth the transition for you and your family:
- Give the post office your forwarding address. Unsubscribe from anything you don’t want forwarded.
- Stock up on moving essentials such as paper bags, bubble wrap, newspapers, packing foam, tape, moving boxes, and sandwich bags.
- Use sandwich bags to store little things like screws, bolts, and hooks, and then label these bags with the furniture or piece the items go with.
- To save space and money, use clean clothes and socks to wrap your breakable items.
- Keep jewelry displays and dresser drawers intact with plastic wrap. If you are moving a dresser full of clothes, you don’t need to take the clothes out. Just cover the drawers and they will serve as pre-packed boxes. You can also use your laundry hampers, decorative baskets, suitcases, and other containers to pack your items.
- Pack items together as much as possible to make unpacking easier: books with books, toys with toys, and so on. Don’t over pack boxes.
- Slip cotton balls or pads in your cosmetic cases to protect them from cracking. Put toiletries in sealable plastic bags so they don’t leak all over your things if they break.
- Write your new address on each box you pack. To simplify this, use address labels.
- Label each box with a description of what is inside. Write labels on all sides of the box in case one side is concealed in packing.
- Color-code labels to correspond with different rooms so that boxes can be organized efficiently.
- Hold a yard sale to get rid of all unneeded or unwanted clutter.
- Make necessary arrangements for any new checking accounts, utilities, and telephone services you will need at your new home. Arrange end-of-service dates and final bills for your current location.
- Arrange with pharmacies in your new location to make sure that your prescription medications are available.
- Keep family treasures, important documents, valuables, and fragile items with you.
- If possible, it is better to move during the week so more services are open such as banks, tow services, and utilities.
- Pack overnight bags for your family members with essentials for the first day or two after you move.
- Put the things you will need right away in a large, clear box. This could include essential kitchen items, phone chargers, toilet paper, tools, a box cutter, power strips, batteries, bath towels, a shower curtain, and toiletries.
